Responsive Reading: Psalm 145:8-9, 14-21
You open wide your hand

8 The LORD is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

9 The LORD is good to all,
and his compassion is over all that he has made.

14 The LORD upholds all who are falling,
and raises up all who are bowed down.

15 The eyes of all look to you,
and you give them their food in due season.

16 You open your hand,
satisfying the desire of every living thing.

17 The LORD is just in all his ways,
and kind in all his doings.

18 The LORD is near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him in truth.

19 He fulfills the desire of all who fear him;
he also hears their cry, and saves them.

20 The LORD watches over all who love him,
but all the wicked he will destroy.

21 My mouth will speak the praise of the LORD,
and all flesh will bless his holy name forever and ever.
Praise the Lord

Opening Hymn: O God, Our Help in Ages Past…#117  (C)
Verse 1

O God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come,
our shelter from the stormy blast,
and our eternal home!

Verse 2

Under the shadow of thy throne,
still may we dwell secure;
sufficient is thine arm alone,
and our defense is sure.

Verse 3

Before the hills in order stood,
or earth received her frame,
from everlasting, thou art God,
to endless years the same.

Verse 4

A thousand ages, in thy sight,
are like an evening gone;
short as the watch that ends the night,
before the rising sun.

Verse 5

Time, like an ever rolling stream,
bears all who breathe away;
they fly forgotten, as a dream dies
at the opening day.

Verse 6

O God, our help in ages past,
our hope for years to come;
be thou our guide while life shall last,
and our eternal home.

Affirmation of Faith:
The Apostle’s Creed..No. 881

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified,
dead,
and buried;
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge
the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Gloria Patri…Page 70

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen. Amen.

Praise Song: I Speak Jesus (C)

I just wanna speak the name of Jesus
Over every heart and every mind
’Cause I know there is peace within Your presence
I speak Jesus

I just wanna speak the name of Jesus
’Til every dark addiction starts to break
Declaring there is hope and there is freedom
I speak Jesus

’Cause Your name is Power Your name is Healing Your name is Life
Break every stronghold Shine through the shadows Burn like a fire
I just wanna speak the name of Jesus
Over fear and all anxiety
To every soul held captive by depression
I speak Jesus

Your name is Power Your name is Healing Your name is Life
Break every stronghold Shine through the shadows Burn like a fire
Shout Jesus from the mountains
Jesus in the streets
Jesus in the darkness over every enemy
Jesus for my family
I speak the holy name Jesus

Shout Jesus from the mountains
Jesus in the streets
Jesus in the darkness over every enemy
Jesus for my family
I speak the holy name Jesus

Your name is Power Your name is Healing Your name is Life
Break every stronghold Shine through the shadows Burn like a fire

Shout Jesus from the mountains
Jesus in the streets
Jesus in the darkness over every enemy
Your name is Power  Your name is Healing Your name is Life
Break every stronghold Shine through the shadows Burn like a fire

I just wanna speak the name of Jesus

Over every heart and every mind
‘Cause I know there is peace within Your presence
I speak Jesus

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever. Amen.

I will call upon the Lord
Who is worthy to be praised.
So shall I be saved from my enemies.
I will call upon the Lord.

I will call upon the Lord
Who is worthy to be praised.
So shall I be saved from my enemies.
I will call upon the Lord.

The Lord liveth and blessed be the Rock;
and let the God of my salvation be exalted.
The Lord liveth and blessed be the Rock;
and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

I will call upon the Lord
[I will call upon the Lord]
Who is worthy to be praised.
[who is worthy to be praised]
So shall I be saved from my enemies.
[so shall I be saved from my enemies]

I will call upon the Lord.
I will call upon the Lord
[I will call upon the Lord]
Who is worthy to be praised.
[who is worthy to be praised]
So shall I be saved from my enemies.

and let the God of my salvation be exalted.
The Lord liveth and blessed be the Rock;
and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

Prayer for Illumination
Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the Scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen.

Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 55:1-5
Eat and drink what truly satisfies

1 Hear, everyone who thirsts; come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread and your earnings for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.

3 Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. 4 See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. 5 Now you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you.

Gospel Reading: Matthew 14:13-21
Jesus feeds 5000

13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick.

15 When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”

16 Jesus said to them, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.”

17 They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.”

18 And he said, “Bring them here to me.”

19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full.

21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

Sermon Text: Romans 9:1-5
The glory of God’s people in Israel

1 I am speaking the truth in Christ–I am not lying; my conscience confirms it by the Holy Spirit–2 I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; 5 to them belong the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, comes the Messiah, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.

Closing Hymn: Standing on the Promises…No. 374 (Bb)

Verse 1

Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
through eternal ages let his praises ring;
glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
standing on the promises of God.
Standing, standing,
standing on the promises of God my Savior;
standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.

Verse 4

Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
listening every moment to the Spirit’s call,
resting in my Savior as my all in all,
standing on the promises of God.
Standing, standing,
standing on the promises of God my Savior;
standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.
