Call to Worship: Tell Me The Stories of Jesus

Responsive Reading: Psalm 118:1-2, 19-29

1O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever! 2Let Israel say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”

19Open to me the gates of righteousness,
that I may enter through them and give thanks to the LORD.

20This is the gate of the LORD;
the righteous shall enter through it.

21I thank you that you have answered me
and have become my salvation.

22The stone that the builders rejected
has become the chief cornerstone.

23This is the LORD’s doing;
it is marvelous in our eyes.

24This is the day that the LORD has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

25Save us, we beseech you, O LORD!
O LORD, we beseech you, give us success!

26Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the LORD.
We bless you from the house of the LORD.

27The LORD is God, and he has given us light.
Bind the festal procession with branches, up to the horns of the altar.

28You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
you are my God; I will extol you.

29O give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever.

Praise the Lord

Opening Hymn: Hosanna, Loud Hosanna…No. 278 (1-3)

Verse 1

Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang;
through pillared court and temple the lovely anthem rang.
To Jesus, who had blessed them close folded to his breast,
the children sang their praises, the simplest and the best.

Verse 2

From Olivet they followed mid an exultant crowd,
the victor palm branch waving, the chanting clear and loud.
The Lord of earth and heaven rode on in lowly state,
nor scorned that little children should on his bidding wait.

Verse 3

“Hosanna in the highest!” that ancient song we sing,
for Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heaven our King.
O may we ever praise him with heart and life and voice,
and in his blissful presence eternally rejoice!

Affirmation of Faith:
The Apostle’s Creed, Ecumenical Version..No. 882

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic** church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.
Amen.

Gloria Patri…Page 70

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen. Amen.

Praise Song: I Speak Jesus

I just wanna speak the name of Jesus
Over every heart and every mind
‘Cause I know there is peace within Your presence
I speak Jesus

I just wanna speak the name of Jesus
‘Til every dark addiction starts to break
Declaring there is hope and there is freedom
I speak Jesus

‘Cause Your name is Power
Your name is Healing
Your name is Life
Break every stronghold
Shine through the shadows
Burn like a fire
I just wanna speak the name of Jesus
Over fear and all anxiety
To every soul held captive by depression
I speak Jesus

Your name is Power
Your name is Healing
Your name is Life
Break every stronghold
Shine through the shadows
Burn like a fire

Shout Jesus from the mountains
Jesus in the streets
Jesus in the darkness over every enemy
Jesus for my family
I speak the holy name
Jesus

Shout Jesus from the mountains
Jesus in the streets
Jesus in the darkness over every enemy
Jesus for my family
I speak the holy name
Jesus

Shout Jesus from the mountains
Jesus in the streets
Jesus in the darkness over every enemy
Jesus for my family
I speak the holy name
Jesus

Shout Jesus from the mountains
Jesus in the streets
Jesus in the darkness over every enemy
Jesus for my family
I speak the holy name
Jesus

I just wanna speak the name of Jesus
Over every heart and every mind
‘Cause I know there is peace within Your presence
I speak Jesus

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever. Amen.

Prayer for Illumination
Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the Scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen.

Gospel Reading: Mark 11:1-11
1When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples 2and said to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. 3If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ just say this: ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.’” 4They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, 5some of the bystanders said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6They told them what Jesus had said, and they allowed them to take it. 7Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. 8Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. 9Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting,
“Hosanna!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
10Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!
Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
11Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple, and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

Sermon Text: Isaiah 50:4-9a

4The Lord God has given me a trained tongue,
that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word.
Morning by morning he wakens, wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught.
5The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious;
I did not turn backward.
6I gave my back to those who struck me and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard
I did not hide my face from insult and spitting.
7The Lord God helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced;
therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; 8he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand in court together.
Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me.
9It is the Lord God who helps me; who will declare me guilty?

Closing Hymn: Precious Name…No. 536 (Ab)

Verse 1

Take the name of Jesus with you,
child of sorrow and of woe;
it will joy and comfort give you;
take it then, where’er you go.

Precious name, O how sweet!
Hope of earth and joy of heaven.
Precious name, O how sweet!
Hope of earth and joy of heaven.

Verse 4

At the name of Jesus
bowing, falling prostrate at his feet,
King of kings in heaven we’ll crown him,
when our journey is complete.

Precious name, O how sweet!
Hope of earth and joy of heaven.
Precious name, O how sweet!
Hope of earth and joy of heaven.
