Call to Worship: Rock of Ages

Responsive Reading: Psalm 62:5-12

5For God alone my soul waits in silence,
for my hope is from him.

6He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress;
I shall not be shaken.
7On God rests my deliverance and my honor;
my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.

8Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us.

9Those of low estate are but a breath;
those of high estate are a delusion;
in the balances they go up;
they are together lighter than a breath.

10Put no confidence in extortion,
and set no vain hopes on robbery;
if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

11Once God has spoken;
twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
12and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord.
For you repay to all
according to their work.

Opening Hymn: A Mighty Fortress is Our God…110

Verse 1

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
our helper he amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
his craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.

Verse 2

Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing,
were not the right man on our side,
the man of God’s own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabaoth, his name, from age to age the same,
and he must win the battle.

Verse 3

And though this world, with devils filled,
should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God hath willed
his truth to triumph through us.
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
his rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure;
one little word shall fell him.

Verse 4

That word above all early powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
the Spirit and the gifts are ours, thru him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
the body they may kill; God’s truth abideth still;
his kingdom is forever.

Affirmation of Faith:
The Apostle’s Creed, Ecumenical Version..No. 882

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic** church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.
Amen.

Gloria Patri…Page 70

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen. Amen.

Praise Song: Jesus, Lover of My Soul

Jesus, lover of my soul
Jesus, I will never let You go
You’ve taken me from the miry clay
You’ve set my feet upon the rock
And now I know I love you
I need you
Though my world may fall
I’ll never let You go My Savior, you’re My closest Friend
I will worship You until the very end
Jesus, lover of my soul
Jesus, I will never let You go
You’ve taken me from the miry clay
You’ve set my feet upon the rock
And now I know I love you
I need you
Though my world may fall
I’ll never let You go My Savior, you’re My closest Friend
I will worship You until the very end
Jesus, lover of my soul
Jesus, I will never let You go

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever. Amen.

Anthem: Abide With Me

Children’s Moment & Song (When We Are Living)

Verse 1

When we are living,
it is in Christ Jesus,
and when we’re dying,
it is in the Lord.
Both in our living
And in our dying,
We belong to God.
We belong to God.

Verse 2

Through all our liv – ing,
we our fruits must give.
Good works of service
are for offering.
Both in our living
and in our dying,
We belong to God.
We belong to God.

Verse 3

’Mid times of sorrow
and in times of pain,
when sensing beauty
or in love’s embrace,
whether we suffer,
or sing rejoicing,
We belong to God.
We belong to God.

Verse 4

Across this wide world,
we shall always find
those who are crying
with no peace of mind,
but when we help them,
or when we feed them,
We belong to God.
We belong to God.

Prayer for Illumination

Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the Scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen.

New Testament Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:29-31
29I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none, 30and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, 31and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.

Leader: The Word of God, for the people of God!
People: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading & Sermon Text: Jonah 3:1-5, 10
1The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, 2“Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.” 3So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. 4Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” 5And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth….

10When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them, and he did not do it.

Leader: This is the Word of God for the people of God
People: Thanks be to God.
