Call to Worship: Every Time I Feel the Spirit

Responsive Reading: Psalm 25:1-10

1To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul.
2O my God, in you I trust;
do not let me be put to shame;
do not let my enemies exult over me.

3Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame;
let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

4Make me to know your ways, O LORD;
teach me your paths.

5Lead me in your truth and teach me,
for you are the God of my salvation;
for you I wait all day long.

6Be mindful of your mercy, O LORD,
and of your steadfast love,
for they have been from of old.

7Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
according to your steadfast love remember me,
for the sake of your goodness, O LORD!

8Good and upright is the LORD;
therefore he instructs sinners in the way.

9He leads the humble in what is right
and teaches the humble his way.

10All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness,
for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.

Opening Hymn: Come Thou Almighty King…No. 61 (1-4)

Verse 1

Come, thou almighty King,
help us thy name to sing,
help us to praise!
Father all glorious, o’er all victorious,
come and reign over us, Ancient of Days!

Verse 2

Come, thou incarnate Word,
gird on thy mighty sword,
our prayer attend!
Come, and thy people bless,
and give thy word success;
Spirit of holiness, on us descend!

Verse 3

Come, holy Comforter,
thy sacred witness bear,
in this glad hour.
Thou who almighty art,
now rule in every heart,
and ne’er from us depart,
Spirit of power!

Verse 4

To thee, great One in Three,
eternal praises be,
hence, evermore.
Thy sovereign majesty
may we in glory see,
and to eternity
love and adore!

Affirmation of Faith:
The Apostle’s Creed, Ecumenical Version..No. 882

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic** church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.
Amen.

Gloria Patri…Page 70

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen. Amen.

Praise Song: I Could Sing of Your Love Forever

Over the mountains and the sea
Your river runs with love for me
And I will open up my heart
And let the Healer set me free
I’m happy to be in the truth,
And I will daily lift my hands
For I will always sing of when
Your love came down
I could sing of your love forever
I could sing of your love forever
I could sing of your love forever
I could sing of your love forever
Over the mountains and the sea
Your river runs with love for me
And I will open up my heart
And let the Healer set me free
I’m happy to be in the truth,
And I will daily lift my hands
For I will always sing of when
Your love came down
I could sing of your love forever
I could sing of your love forever
I could sing of your love forever
I could sing of your love forever
Oh I feel like dancing
It’s foolishness I know
But when the world has seen the light
They will dance with joy like we’re dancing now
I could sing of your love forever
I could sing of your love forever
I could sing of your love forever
I could sing of your love forever

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever. Amen.

Prayer for Illumination
Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the Scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen.

New Testament Reading: 1 Peter 3:18-22

18For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, 20who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight lives, were saved through water. 21And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you—not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.

Gospel Reading & Sermon Text: Mark 1:9-15
9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove upon him. 11And a voice came from the heavens, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

12And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13He was in the wilderness forty days, tested by Satan, and he was with the wild beasts, and the angels waited on him.

14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the good news of God 15and saying, “The time is  fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

Closing Hymn: Breathe on Me, Breath of God No. 420 (1&4)

Verse 1

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
fill me with life anew,
that I may love what thou dost love,
and do what thou wouldst do.

Verse 4

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
so shall I never die,
but live with thee the perfect life of thine eternity.
