Response: Psalm 132:1-18
The faithful sing with joy

1O LORD, remember in David’s favor all the hardships he endured;
2 how he swore to the LORD
and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob,

3 “I will not enter my house or get into my bed;
4 I will not give sleep to my eyes or slumber to my eyelids,
5 until I find a place for the LORD,
a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

6 We heard of it in Ephrathah;
we found it in the fields of Jaar.

7 “Let us go to his dwelling place;
let us worship at his footstool.”

8 Rise up, O LORD, and go to your resting place,
you and the ark of your might.
9 Let your priests be clothed with righteousness,
and let your faithful shout for joy.

10 For your servant David’s sake
do not turn away the face of your anointed one.

11 The LORD swore to David a sure oath
from which he will not turn back:
“One of the sons of your body I will set on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant and my decrees that I shall teach them,
their sons also, forevermore, shall sit on your throne.”

13 For the LORD has chosen Zion;
he has desired it for his habitation:

14 “This is my resting place forever;
here I will reside, for I have desired it.

15 I will abundantly bless its provisions;
I will satisfy its poor with bread.

16 Its priests I will clothe with salvation,
and its faithful will shout for joy.

17 There I will cause a horn to sprout up for David;
I have prepared a lamp for my anointed one.

18 His enemies I will clothe with disgrace,
but on him, his crown will gleam.”

Praise the Lord!

Opening Hymn: Praise to the Lord, The Almighty…No. 139 (F)

Verse 1

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul praise him, for he is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to temple draw near;
join me in glad adoration!

Verse 2

Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigning
bears thee on eagle’s wings, e’er in his keeping maintaining.
God’s care enfolds all, whose true good he upholds.
Hast thou not known his sustaining?

Verse 3

Praise to the Lord,
who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
surely his goodness and mercy here daily attend thee.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do,
who with his love doth befriend thee.

Verse 4

Praise to the Lord, who doth nourish thy life and restore thee;
fitting thee well for the tasks that are ever before thee.
Then to thy need God as a mother doth speed,
spreading the wings of grace o’er thee.

Verse 5

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him!
All that hath life and breath,
come now with praises before him!
Let the amen sound from his people again;
gladly forever adore him.

Affirmation of Faith:
The Apostle’s Creed..No. 881

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified,
dead,
and buried;
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge
the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Gloria Patri…Page 70

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen. Amen.

Praise Song: Crown Him with Many Crowns…No. 327 (Eb)

Verse 1

Crown him with many crowns,
the Lamb upon his throne.
Hark! how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own.
Awake, my soul, and sing
of him who died for thee,
and hail him as thy matchless King through all eternity.

Verse 2

Crown him the Lord of life,
who triumphed o’er the grave,
and rose victorious in the strife for those he came to save.
His glories now we sing,
who died, and rose on high,
who died, eternal life to bring,
and lives that death may die.

Verse 3

Crown him the Lord of love;
behold his hands and side,
rich wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified.
No angel in the sky
can fully bear that sight
but downward bends
each burning eye at mysteries so bright.

Verse 4

Crown him the Lord of peace,
whose power a scepter sways
from pole to pole,
that wars may cease, and all be prayer and praise.
His reign shall know no end,
and round his pierced feet
fair flowers of paradise extend
their fragrance ever sweet.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever. Amen.

Gospel Reading:  John 18:33-37
The kingdom of Christ

33 Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
34 Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?”
35 Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?”
36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom does not belong to this world. If my kingdom belonged to this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”
37 Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”

Christ, the ruler of the earth

4b Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood, 6 and made us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

7 Look! He is coming with the clouds; every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and on his account all the tribes of the earth will wail. So it is to be. Amen.

Sermon Text:  Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14
The coming one rules over all

As I watched, thrones were set in place, and an Ancient One took his throne; his clothing was white as snow and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, and its wheels were burning fire.
10  A stream of fire issued and flowed out from his presence. A thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood attending him. The court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. …

13  As I watched in the night visions, I saw one like a human being coming with the clouds of heaven. And he came to the Ancient One and was presented before him.
14  To him was given dominion and glory and kingship, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not pass away, and his kingship is one that shall never be destroyed.

People: Thanks be to God.

Closing Hymn: We’ve a Story to Tell To the Nations….569 (F)

Verse 1

We’ve a story to tell the nations,
that shall turn their hearts to the right,
a story of truth and mercy, a story of peace and light.
a story of peace and light.
For the darkness shall turn to dawning,
and the dawning to noon day bright;
and Christ’s great kingdom shall come on earth,
the kingdom of love and light.

Verse 4

We’ve a Savior to show the nations,
who the path of sorrow hat trod,
that all of the world’s great peoples
might come to the truth of God,
might come to the truth of God.
For the darkness shall turn to dawning,
and the dawning to noon day bright;
and Christ’s great kingdom shall come on earth,
the kingdom of love and light.
